Russians will retain the right to obtain a residence permit in Latvia when buying a home

Reports have become more frequent in the media that the Latvian government will introduce a ban on obtaining a residence permit for Russian citizens when buying real estate. Portal Prian.ru reports that this is not true. At the state level, ultra-radical and nationalist parties have repeatedly made proposals to the Latvian Seimas with demands to restrict the rights of foreign buyers of real estate. However, the President of the country regularly rejected such proposals. At the moment, the law "on immigration" allows foreign buyers to obtain a residence permit when buying a home in the amount of 250 thousand euros. Previously, this amount was from 142 thousand in Riga and from 71150 in other cities. The increase in the price threshold was also due to pressure on the legislators of the ultra-right forces. Since 2010, when buying real estate, the Latvian economy has replenished its budget in the amount of almost $ 1 billion. A total of 4,887 real estate objects were purchased. Every year, the number of acquisitions by foreign investors increased. Until August 2014, 1,569 real estate purchase and sale transactions were made, since 2010, 13,843 citizens from 44 countries have received a residence permit, among which the most are Russians..
