The number of trips of Russians abroad for the purpose of tourism from January to September 2015 decreased by 31.4% compared to the same period last year, which is the biggest drop in the last 15 years. This was reported to the Interfax news agency by the press secretary of the Russian Union of the Travel Industry (PCT) Irina Tyurina.

Referring to Rosstat data, she explained that from January to September, 9 million 995.5 thousand trips abroad were made, which is 31.4% less than a year earlier. At the same time, in the same period of 2014, the number of trips decreased by only 1.6%.

Prior to that, a sharp decrease in departure was recorded in 2009 — by 18%, in 2005 — by 2.6%, in 2003 — by 12.6%, in 2000 — by 15%, Tyurina noted. "That is, the drop in the first nine months of 2015 is the most significant in the last 15 years. We do not have quarterly data for an earlier period at our disposal," she explained.

The total departure of Russians abroad for the first nine months of 2015 decreased by 20% and amounted to 29 million 333.4 thousand trips. Last year, this indicator decreased by 13.6%, and in 2013 it increased by 12%.

At the same time, due to the increase in prices for traveling abroad caused by the devaluation of the ruble, as well as the closure of popular winter holiday destinations among Russians, Turkey and Egypt, Russians have increased demand for Russian resorts for the New Year holidays. According to the website Anywayanyday.com in 2015, the share of Russian destinations in the total demand structure increased to 36 from 20% in 2014.

For the development of domestic tourism, the government has created a special Coordinating Council, which was headed by Deputy Prime Minister Olga Golodets, her deputy was the Minister of Culture Vladimir Medinsky. According to the head of Rostourism Oleg Safonov, an all-inclusive system should appear in order to attract vacationers to Russian resorts.
